NSO 2024 IS HERE!

National Science Olympiad 2024

The NSO 2024 will be a team-based, interschool, research focused science competition. The competition problems will come from various areas of natural sciences and attract the students to do interdisciplinary, independent research from across the sciences without prioritizing any narrow area.

The National Science Olympiad 2024

The NSO 2024 will happen across two levels.

  • The Regional Qualifiers - School Level Competition;
    • Research Paper – (September 2023 - February 2024). Students will have six months to conduct research on specific scientific topics of their choice. These Research Problems have been designed to align with their classroom curriculum and are intended to be directly relevant to their core academic journey. The main objective of this phase is to promote critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to carry out scientific investigations. The Research Paper will account for 60% of the total score for each team.
    • Theory Exam - (March 2024). After the completion of the six-month research period, a theory exam will be held in March 2024 at the school campus. The Foundation will send a team of examiners to conduct the exam, and the exact date will be communicated later. The questions for this exam will be based on the research papers submitted by the participating teams. The purpose of this exam is to ensure that all students actively participated in the research process and that each team member has a comprehensive understanding of the issues related to their research area. The theory exam will contribute 40% towards the team's overall score.
  • The National Championship (01st June, 2024 at Galaxy International School Uganda). The National Championship will bring together the top 30 teams country wide from the Regional Qualifiers. It will take on the model of the Science Fights. Science Fights mimic the real-world environment of a PhD defence. Special training will be offered to qualifying teams.

Each participating school shall register students in teams of either 4 or 6 students each. There is no upper CAP to how many student teams one single school can subscribe. Students can come from either O’level or A’level, provided this is clearly indicated upon registration. Research Problems are the same for both O’level and A’level students, however, grading of the Research work will be different.

Each competing team shall pay UGX. 60,000 as participating fees for the NSO 2024 Regional Qualifiers, regardless of number of students in the team. Please find the standard UNSO 2023 Student Registration Form attached herewith.

The National Science Olympiad will serve as a qualifier round for the following International Olympiads

  • International Young Physicists Tournament, IYPT 2025 (Sweden)
  • International Young Naturalists Tournament, IYNT 2025 (Host Country TBD)
  • International Junior Science Olympiad, IJSO 2025 (Russia)
  • International Mathematics Competition, IMC 2025 (Indonesia)

Top performing schools and students will be rewarded with special plaques, trophies, medals, and certificates at the NSO 2024 Award Ceremony to happen on the day of the National Rounds.

We look forward to an exciting NSO 2024.

Research Paper Problems
Instructions: For the UNSO 2024, you are required to select two subjects out of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Within each subject, choose 2 Research Problems to attempt. However, ensure that the two problems you choose from a subject do not come from the same topical area. For instance, if you select Physics, one problem can be from the topic Heat, and the other should be from either Light or Magnetism.
